Virgin Records printed material by Brian Cooke
In 1971, at the invitation of Chris Blackwell, I became Island Records’
in house photographer and with my graphic designer wife Marylin, set
up Visualeyes Ltd to work with the label’s iconic 70’s artists such as
Roxy Music, Traffic, John Martyn and Mott The Hoople. In the latter half
of the 70’s I teamed up with fellow Yorkshire photographer Trevor Key
to form Cooke Key Associates and we became Virgin Records’ agency
working with their early artists such as Mike Oldfield, Tangerine Dream
and The Sex Pistols. During this time we were responsible for the design
of the now world famous Virgin logo. We also worked for other record
companies, such as Chrysalis, for who I photographed artists including
Blondie, Spandau Ballet and Ultravox. In the 80’s and onward Cooke Key
disbanded so I continued with a renamed Visualeyes Imaging Services,
which became the premier reproduction company to London’s music
business, building up a unique archive of pictures.
